What happens during dental implant surgery?
From start to finish, getting dental implants can take three to six months. This might seem long, but each step is essential for creating a stable, long-lasting result.
- Initial Consultation and Evaluation — Dr. Hu examines your oral health and takes digital x-rays and 3-D scans to evaluate bone density and plan precise implant placement.
- Bone Grafting (if needed) — Some patients require bone grafting or sinus lift procedures to ensure there is adequate bone density for successful implant placement.
- Implant Placement Surgery — Dr. Hu places the titanium posts surgically into the jawbone at our office under local anesthesia.
- Healing and Osseointegration — Over the next several months, the implants fuse with the jawbone through a natural process called osseointegration.
- Abutment Placement — Once healing is complete, Dr. Hu attaches a small connector piece called an abutment that secures the implant to the tooth restoration.
- Final Restoration — Dr. Hu custom-crafts a natural-looking crown, bridge, or denture to the abutments to complete your smile.
Will the implant procedure hurt?
Implant surgery is performed under local anesthesia, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. We also offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) for your complete comfort. Mild soreness afterward is normal and usually managed with over-the-counter pain medication or ice packs.
