What is a root canal, exactly?
Inside every tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. If the pulp becomes infected from decay, a crack, or trauma, it can cause severe pain or swelling.
When this occurs, Dr. Hu will numb the area so you don't feel any pain, remove the infection, clean the inside of the tooth, and seal it to prevent further issues. The procedure can make the tooth brittle and more prone to damage, so we typically recommend a dental crown to protect it.
How long does a root canal take?
Most root canals take about one hour, depending on how many canals are in the tooth. After the procedure, we’ll place a temporary filling or crown, and you’ll return later for the final restoration.
What if I’m nervous about the procedure?
We understand dental anxiety around procedures like root canals and offer nitrous oxide to help you feel relaxed and comfortable. You’ll be awake but calm, and treatment usually feels quick and easy.
A severe toothache can make it hard to eat, sleep, or even get through your day. Many people fear that root canals are painful, but it's actually the opposite: A root canal removes the infection that causes the pain to provide immediate relief. With local anesthesia and nitrous oxide available, most patients feel comfortable throughout the procedure and are surprised by how easy the experience feels.
